This Years Speaker Was:

Climbing For Christ founder Gary Fallesen

Gary Fallesen

The only thing I ever wanted to be was a sportswriter. I knew what my dream job was at the age of 8. I started working for weekly newspapers in high school and moved to the daily newspaper in Rochester, NY when I was in college. I realized my goal of becoming a columnist before the age of 30. I wrote two books. I was living my dream.

Then God introduced me to HIS dream for my life.

I was mountain climbing in the Alaska Range in 2003. You know in the Alaska Range you are bound to be snowed in at some point. I came prepared: packing in my Bible, Christian music, and John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life. Sure enough, a blizzard blew in and for four days my climbing partner and I were tent-bound. God used this time to speak to me through Piper’s book. He told me I wasn’t going to finish my career as a sportswriter. He had something else for me to do.

Climbing For Christ had been birthed through me in 1998 as I trained to climb Africa’s tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro. We were incorporated as a non-profit in 2004 and began doing missions in 2005. At the end of 2006, I walked out of the newsroom for the final time. I left sports writing at a newspaper to deliver the Good News of Jesus Christ in mountainous areas around the world.

Today, Climbing For Christ has nearly 2,700 members in 69 countries. We have conducted 109 short-term mission trips in 16 years. But, more importantly, we have indigenous Kingdom workers and ministry partners serving spiritual and physical needs fulltime in 10 countries: the Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, Tanzania, and Turkey.

I am honored to be used by God to equip, empower, and encourage workers in unique places and in unique ways, making disciples and planting churches. Climbing For Christ’s primary purpose is to GO and deliver the Gospel in the mountains of the world, where other missionaries cannot or will not go. From Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to Mount Ararat in Turkey, from Nepal’s Himalayas to the Peruvian Andes, and from the Chaine de la Selle mountains of Haiti to the volcanoes of Indonesia.

Not bad for a guy who didn’t even start following Jesus until after I married a Christian woman and had the Spirit change my heart. God turned my world upside-down – from being about me to being all about HIM. He turned me from an award-winning sportswriter to be a servant of Christ. I give thanks every day that God’s dream for my life came true.
